Congregation Beth Shalom’s Center for Jewish Learning is a warm and welcoming integrated community of school, synagogue and family with shared vision, practices, celebration and life-long learning. Students will discover the depth and joy of Jewish tradition and Conservative practice. Through learning Torah, Mitzvot, prayer, history, values and ethics, they will have a desire to live it and pass it on.
Curriculum Overview
Our course of study includes Hebrew, Torah study, Jewish history and values, davening (praying) and holiday celebrations. At each grade level we build on what was learned in previous grades. We provide unique opportunities to compliment classroom experiences including but not limited to art, cooking, computers and Hebrew/Israeli music, Holiday Programming and providing experiences, which deepen the classroom learning and help ensure the connection between learning and living a Jewish life.
We take pride in the partnership between the school and the parent body, which is represented by the Religious School Board members and an active R.S.P. (Religious School Parents). The Board and R.S.P. provide guidance and support to our school.
Talmud Torah: We offer a layered continuum approach to studying Torah throughout our religious school experience. The students connect to our ancestors through stories of the Bible and the Parshah (Portion) of the week.
Tefillah/Prayer: We focus on fluency and comprehension of prayer and blessings for weekdays, Shabbat, holidays and other daily or special occasions (blessings for wine, candles, bread, etc.). Our students will acquire Hebrew literacy, Siddur/davening skills and other necessary “tools” to be able to participate in prayer and feel comfortable in a synagogue. Students will acquire the skills to become Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
Tikkun Olam/Jewish Ethics and Values: Students strive to make the world a better place by fulfilling the mitzvah of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world). They learn Jewish values through hands-on experiences and field trips to community non-profit organizations.
Israel: Students have a connection with Israel and the foundations of our Jewish spirit and heritage. They will learn the history, geography, politics and culture of Israel as they advance through the grades. Our 4th and 5th graders enjoy an ongoing relationship with Gilad school in Nazaret Ilit through Federation 2000’s school-to-school program. Throughout the year students write to each other send holiday crafts and food and celebrate a shared Model Seder via video conference.
Klal Yisrael: Our students learn Jewish history from the beginning to the present; appreciating our rich past as a people and our connection to Jews around the world in the past, at present and in the future.
Hebrew: We strive for Siddur fluency and a taste of Modern Hebrew literacy.
Holidays: In classrooms and through experiential opportunities our students explore the Biblical and historical content of the holidays.
